Lead Teaching Artist aka “Professor”~

Job Description

Seeking: A Lead Teaching Artist aka “PROFESSOR”

Brief role description: Professors at Fiddleheart encapsulate a combination of traditional theatre summer camp roles: equal parts camp counselor, teaching artist, and bold and creative actor and improviser.  [If you are athletically inclined, see also Athletic Coach aka “Quidditch Coach” below as this is a similar role to Camp Counselor with an emphasis on athletic coaching and game play.]

About Fiddleheart: Fiddleheart Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Fiddleheart is an immersive and imaginative summer camp for ages 9-15. Our students take "magical” classes such as potions, magical creatures, Quidditch, etc. Classes in cooking, chemistry, ethics, the visual and performing arts, and so forth are creatively adapted to immerse our students in our imaginary school of witchcraft and wizardry (for instance, craft glue is actually troll boogers). The students also solve a mystery ~ a LARP-style storyline ~ which is guided and acted out by Professors & guest artists over the two-week session. 

Summer 2024 Term: June 30-July 3, 2024 (Training and Set up) AND July 7 (evening) -July 20, 2024 (Two- week session and one clean-up day). [NOTE: July 4-July 6 is off for the holiday.]

Span of Camp Day: Monday-Friday 8:00AM - 4:30PM

Location: Stockton, NJ (group housing may available if necessary)

Duties / Professors are responsible for:

  • Developing “magical” curriculum for at least three different 45-minute classes in collaboration with Director

  • Lead-teaching classes for groups of 12-17 students

  • Assisting in classes for which they are not the teaching Professor

  • Guiding House bonding games and activities

  • Performing pieces of scripted, semi-scripted, or fully improvised mystery plot points

  • Attending staff meetings before and after students arrive on campus

  • Creating a name and backstory for your Professor character, and committing to staying in character in the company of students

  • Creatively contributing to the world-building and imaginative play of Fiddleheart with other staff and students

  • Helping to set up and clean up

  • Embodying Fiddleheart’s core values of imaginative play, discovery, and love 

Skills / Core assets for Professors include:

  • Teaching experience

  • Performance and Improvisation experience

  • Enjoyment of kids and creating connections through imagination and play

  • Enthusiasm for magical worlds, both established in works of fiction and entirely original

Medical Director aka “Healer”~

Job Description

Seeking: Medical Director aka “HEALER

Brief role description: The Healer at Fiddleheart is responsible for the physical well-being and basic medical care of approximately 50 campers and 10 adult staff during our two week summer session. NOTE: this position is open to those with a willingness to fulfill all the needed skills and qualifications however a nurse or nursing student is preferred.

About Fiddleheart: Fiddleheart Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Fiddleheart is an immersive and imaginative summer camp for ages 9-15. Our students take "magical” classes such as potions, magical creatures, Quidditch, etc. Classes in cooking, chemistry, ethics, the visual and performing arts, and so forth are creatively adapted to immerse our students in our imaginary school of witchcraft and wizardry (for instance, craft glue is actually troll boogers). The students also solve a mystery ~ a LARP-style storyline ~ which is guided and acted out by Professors & guest artists over the two-week session.

Duties /The Healer is responsible for:

  • Review and organize camper medical paperwork including allergy information, immunization records, and pre-existing medical conditions to ensure campers’ safety

  • Monitor camper Care Plans for completion

  • Provide first aid care for campers and staff

  • Report all health and dietary alerts to camp management at end of day meeting

  • Assist on daily lunch checks to ensure camper dietary restrictions are adhered to

  • Maintain on-site, written parental consent for emergency medical treatment

  • Maintain both electronic and handwritten medical logs, updating as needed

  • Document all care given during camp

  • Document all medications brought to camp ensuring: all medications are labeled and stored in the original container or prescription container, as applicable, and in accordance with manufacturer instructions; all medications are stored in a secure area that is inaccessible to the campers; all unused medication is returned to campers’ parents or guardians within three business days after the campers’ last day (if unable to return medication, destroy any remaining medication)

  • Document campers’ medication information including: the condition for which the medication is being used; cautionary information specific to the medication, instructions for administration including dosage and frequency of administration, date, time, and name of the person administering the medication to the camper, medication error, adverse drug reaction; inform the prescribing physician of any medication error or adverse drug reaction

  • Administer proper dosage of prescribed medication at the correct time with written consent from parent, guardian, or physician

  • Notify Camp Administration of emergency medical needs

  • Ensure the main first aid kit is replenished weekly and prepare traveling first aid kits for Quidditch games

  • Provide ongoing communication to Camp Administration with respect to camper information, health status, behavior observations, camper interactions, anecdotes, etc

  • Communicate with parents in regards to medical forms, camper incidents, or other times when necessary

  • Following NJ regulation guidelines for registered camps: assist in the preparation for onsite health inspection; assist with and document all scheduled fire/emergency drills

  • Set up “Healer’s Room” both practically and creatively

  • Other responsibilities, as needed

Skills / Core assets for The Healer include:

  • Knowledge of common childhood illnesses, rashes and communicable disease common to youth and summer camp setting

  • Understanding of food allergies

  • Strong diagnostic skills

  • Prior experience with children and young adults

  • Good bedside manner, friendly and personable

  • Proficient with electronic record keeping or Google Workspaces

  • Current First Aid certification or willingness to obtain

  • Current CPR / AED certification or willingness to obtain

  • Ability to administer an Epi-pen

  • Currently a school nurse or nursing student a PLUS.

  • A fondness for Harry Potter a plus.

Athletics Director aka“Quidditch Coach”~

Job Description

Seeking: An Athletic Director aka “QUIDDITCH COACH”

Brief role description: The Quidditch Coach at Fiddleheart is equal parts camp counselor, athletic and games director and actor/improvisor. The Quidditch coach is responsible for teaching students the game of Quidditch, leading all Quidditch matches as well as engaging students in other games and activities.

About Fiddleheart: Fiddleheart Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Fiddleheart is an immersive and imaginative summer camp for ages 9-15. Our students take "magical” classes such as potions, magical creatures, Quidditch, etc. Classes in cooking, chemistry, ethics, the visual and performing arts, and so forth are creatively adapted to immerse our students in our imaginary school of witchcraft and wizardry (for instance, craft glue is actually troll boogers).   • Teaching entire camp (50 students) the fundamentals of Quidditch and Fiddleheart’s version of game play (Coach will be given instructions and guidelines once hired).

  • Lead Quidditch matches as the whole school coach and game referee

  • Assisting in classes of other Professors when not teaching

  • Guiding House bonding games and activities, if needed

  • Performing pieces of scripted, semi-scripted, or fully improvised mystery plot points

  • Attending staff meetings before and after students arrive on campus

  • Creating a name and backstory for your Professor character, and committing to staying in character in the company of students

  • Creatively contributing to the world-building and imaginative play of Fiddleheart with other staff and students

  • Helping to set up and clean up

  • Teaching other 45-minutes “magical” classes as needed

Camp Stage Manager aka “Keeper of Keys & Time”~

Job Description

Seeking: A Camp Stage Manager aka “KEEPER”

Brief role description: The Keeper at Fiddleheart is similar to the “Professor” staff position however it involves more administrative responsibilities between staff, students and parents and less acting, teaching and storyline participation.

About Fiddleheart: Fiddleheart Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Fiddleheart is an immersive and imaginative summer camp for ages 9-15. Our students take "magical” classes such as potions, magical creatures, Quidditch, etc. Classes in cooking, chemistry, ethics, the visual and performing arts, and so forth are creatively adapted to immerse our students in our imaginary school of witchcraft and wizardry (for instance, craft glue is actually troll boogers). The students also solve a mystery ~ a LARP-style storyline ~ which is guided and acted out by Professors & guest artists over the two-week session.

Duties / The Keeper is responsible for:

  • Organize student registration information (Google sheets): create documents for check-in/out, student class groups, student house groups, medical needs, etc

  • Maintain email communication with parents/guardians re: needed registration information, pre-session welcome, mid-session update, final day, etc

  • Co-lead daily morning and afternoon meetings (before students arrive and after they are dismissed) re: daily schedule with Camp Director & Storyline Director

  • Track timing of daily events, making in-the-moment adjustments as necessary, using walkie-talkies for school-wide announcements as needed to keep the day running smoothly

  • Organize and track supplies in co-ordination with other staff members

  • Track walkie-talkies: assign walkies to staff daily, collect and charge walkies at end of day.

  • Check in/out students daily

  • Call guardians as needed during the day; co-ordinate parent communication with Director and Nurse as needed

  • Manage Counselors-in-Training aka “Apprentices”

  • Set up, break-down and clean as needed

  • Take staff lunch orders and drive to pick up lunch at nearby restaurant daily

  • Creating a name and backstory for your Professor character, and committing to staying in character in the company of students

  • Embodying Fiddleheart’s core values of imaginative play, discovery, and love 

  • Less but still needed: Performing pieces of scripted, semi-scripted, or fully improvised mystery plot points, as needed

  • Less but still needed: Creatively contributing to the world-building and imaginative play of Fiddleheart with other staff and students

“Guest Professor”~

Job Description

Seeking: A “ GUEST PROFESSOR

Brief role description: A Guest Professor is required to commit for 1-3 total days out of the two weeks of camp. Duties include class development, teaching, acting in character within the magical world of Fiddleheart and minor participation in the storyline.

  • Attend a few short meetings: generally 1 or 2 phone or zoom meetings prior to the start of the summer session and/or partial attendance on a training day

  • Communicate clear list of supplies needed prior to the start of the session to Director

  • Performing pieces of scripted, semi-scripted, or fully improvised mystery plot points

  • Attending staff meetings before and after students arrive on campus on the day they are teaching

  • Creating a name and backstory for your Professor character, and committing to staying in character in the company of students

  • Creatively contributing to the world-building and imaginative play of Fiddleheart with other staff and students during the day that they are teaching

  • Embodying Fiddleheart’s core values of imaginative play, discovery, and love

Seeking: An “ACTOR”

Brief role description: the ACTOR is required to commit to 1-3 total days out of the two weeks of camp. Duties include acting and improvising in character within the magical world of Fiddleheart. Depending on the role, it may be entirely improvised or require 1-3 hours of in-person rehearsal.

  • Attending staff meetings before and after students arrive on campus on the day they are performing

  • Embodying Fiddleheart’s core values of imaginative play, discovery, and love
